Mumbai, Pune Brace for Intense Rainfall: Breaking Weather Alert

Mumbai Rain News: Mumbai remains on orange alert until August 19th with forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Pune is under a red alert, anticipating extremely heavy showers. Lake levels in Mumbai have crossed 90 per cent, prompting the BMC to caution citizens against venturing near the shoreline during high tide.

Weather Updates and Warnings

Mumbai and large parts of Maharashtra are preparing for extended periods of intense monsoon rain as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has prolonged its weather alerts. The city remains under an orange alert until Tuesday, August 19th. The neighbouring city of Pune has been placed under a red alert, with extremely heavy rainfall expected over the next 48 hours.

Regional Alerts: Konkan Region

According to the IMD’s five-day forecast, several districts in the Konkan region are also likely to experience widespread rain.

The Cause of the Heavy Rainfall

“The heavy rainfall is being caused due to a low pressure that has developed over the Bay of Bengal. This has led to the formation of an east-west trough extending to the Arabian Sea, resulting in severe rainfall in the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. The rainfall will continue until the middle of next week, which is why the alerts have been extended for Mumbai,” an IMD official stated, according to a TIE report.
